Mastering light and shadows in your photographs

How light behaves Part 2|2

Hey you!

Do you know why some pictures look flat while others have beautiful contrast? Why do people look like a deer caught in headlights when you photograph them when you are standing in the exact same position that the photographer took a beautiful image just moments before? Does any of that resonate with you?

This is a short introduction of how hard and soft shadows come about and what you can use to make your images brighter. I will explain with examples what the difference is between the light of the sun, the light you get on a cloudy day or if you use an in-camera flash or hand held flash.

This two part series about the basics of How light works should give you a first understanding of how to paint with light and start you off taking control of your photograph

Lighting up your Photography

How light behaves Part 1|2

Hey you!

If you want to see something on your photograph there has to be at least some sort of light illuminating what you want to take a picture of. A good photographer knows how to use light and paint with it. The right lighting mood gives the picture its soul! But to be able to paint with light you first have to understand how light works. Does the distance of the light source make a difference? Does light influence a pictures mood?

This is a short introduction of what you can liken light to, to be able to understand the general gist of it. I will explain, using examples, how distance influences what will be brighter and what will be darker in your image as well as what utilities you can use to add contrast to your images.

Negative space & Perspective in people photography

Framing series for beginners Part 2 | 2

Hey you!

Two things that can really enhance your image but can also be very bad are Negative Space and Perspective. Negative Space is used to highlight the main focus of your image and gives it room to breath. Perspective, on the other hand, can either be a storytelling tool which can create a feeling of being removed, being in the midst of the action or being a mouse in the corner of the room. Perspective can make a person feel small, feel intimidated, feel powerful and can let the model look big, thin, powerful or powerless amongst other things.

This video gives you a first introduction into these topics and what to look out for to get optimal results. A person doesn’t always have to fill the whole frame as well as they also don’t always have to be shot from eye level. A different perspective can change your picture from looking like every other random shot to standing out and getting noticed.

The video is separated into 2 chapters, you can skip forward or back to the ones you want to watch again, but just in case, here they are including timestamp:
